Hark The Glad Sound! (Bristol, Organ, 4 Verses)

Hark The Glad Sound : Lyrics

Hark, the glad sound! The Saviour comes,
The Saviour promised long!
Let ev’ry heart prepare a throne,
And ev’ry voice a song.

He comes the pris’ners to release,
In Satan’s bondage held;
The gates of brass before Him burst,
The iron fetters yield.

He comes the broken heart to bind,
The bleeding soul to cure,
And with the treasures of His grace
T’enrich the humbled poor.

Our glad Hosannas, Prince of Peace,
Thy welcome shall proclaim;
And heav’n’s eternal arches ring
With Thy beloved Name.

Hark The Glad Sound! (Crediton – 4/5 Verses) – Organ

Hark The Glad Sound! Lyrics

Hark, the glad sound! The Saviour comes,
the Saviour promised long!
Let ev’ry heart prepare a throne,
and ev’ry voice a song.

He comes the pris’ners to release,
in Satan’s bondage held;
the gates of brass before Him burst,
the iron fetters yield.

He comes to free the captive mind, *
where evil thoughts control,
and for the darkness of the blind
gives light that makes them whole.

He comes the broken heart to bind,
the bleeding soul to cure,
and with the treasures of His grace
t’enrich the humbled poor.

Our glad Hosannas, Prince of Peace,
Thy welcome shall proclaim;
and heav’n’s eternal arches ring
with Thy beloved Name.

Let All Mortal Flesh Keep Silence (Picardy – 4 Verses) – Organ

Let All Mortal Flesh Keep Silence ~ Lyrics

Let all mortal flesh keep silence,
And with fear and trembling stand;
Ponder nothing earthly minded,
For with blessing in His hand,
Christ our God to earth descendeth,
Our full homage to demand.

King of kings, yet born of Mary,
As of old on earth He stood,
Lord of lords, in human vesture,
In the body and the blood;
He will give to all the faithful
His own self for heavenly food.

Rank on rank the host of heaven
Spreads its vanguard on the way,
As the Light of light descendeth
From the realms of endless day,
That the powers of hell may vanish
As the darkness clears away.

At His feet the six wingèd seraph,
Cherubim with sleepless eye,
Veil their faces to the presence,
As with ceaseless voice they cry:
Alleluia, Alleluia
Alleluia, Lord Most High!

I Know A Rose Tree Springing (Es Is Ein Ros Entsprungen – 3 Verses) – Organ & Trumpet Descant

I Know A Rose Tree Springing Lyrics

I know a rose tree springing
Forth from an ancient root,
As men of old we singing,
From Jesse came the shoot
That bore a blossom bright
Amid the cold of winter,
When half spent was the night.

This rose-tree, blossom laden,
Whereof Isaiah spake,
Is Mary, spotless maiden
Who mothered, for our sake,
The little Child, newborn,
By God’s eternal counsel,
On that first Christmas morn .

O Flow’r, whose fragrance tender
With sweetness fills the air,
Dispel in glorious splendor
The darkness ev’rywhere;
True man, yet very God
From sin and death now save us
And share our ev’ry load.

German Original

Es ist ein Ros entsprungen,
aus einer Wurzel zart,
wie uns die Alten sungen,
von Jesse kam die Art
Und hat ein Blümlein bracht
mitten im kalten Winter,
wohl zu der halben Nacht.

Das Röslein, das ich meine,
davon Isaias sagt,
ist Maria die reine
die uns das Blümlein bracht.
Aus Gottes ew’gem Rat
hat sie ein Kind geboren
und blieb ein reine Magd.
or: Welches uns selig macht.

Das Blümelein, so kleine,
das duftet uns so süß,
mit seinem hellen Scheine
vertreibt’s die Finsternis.
Wahr Mensch und wahrer Gott,
hilft uns aus allem Leide,
rettet von Sünd und Tod.

I Cannot Tell (Londonderry Air – 4 Verses) – Piano Ensemble

I Cannot Tell Lyrics

I cannot tell why he, whom angels worship,
Should set his love upon the sons of men,
Or why, as Shepherd, he should seek the wanderers,
To bring them back, they know not how or when.
But this I know, that he was born of Mary
When Bethl’em’s manger was his only home,
And that he lived at Nazareth and laboured,
And so the Saviour, Saviour of the world, is come.

I cannot tell how silently he suffered,
As with his peace he graced this place of tears,
Or how his heart upon the cross was broken,
The crown of pain to three and thirty years.
But this I know, he heals the broken-hearted
And stays our sin and calms our lurking fear
And lifts the burden from the heavy laden;
For still the Saviour, Saviour of the world is here.

I cannot tell how he will win the nations,
How he will claim his earthly heritage,
How satisfy the needs and aspirations
Of east and west, of sinner and of sage.
But this I know, all flesh shall see his glory,
And he shall reap the harvest he has sown,
And some glad day his sun will shine in splendour
When he the Saviour, Saviour of the world, is known.

I cannot tell how all the lands shall worship,
When at his bidding every storm is stilled,
Or who can say how great the jubilation
When every heart with love and joy is filled.
But this I know, the skies will thrill with rapture,
And myriad myriad human voices sing,
And earth to heav’n, and heav’n to earth, will answer,
‘At last the Saviour, Saviour of the world, is King!’

Oh Lead Us By The Hand Lord (Crossing Over Jordan, Blue Grass, 2 Verses)

Oh Lead Us By The Hand Lord : Lyrics

Oh lead us by the hand, Lord,
And take us to the river;
O-ho, help us, dearest Saviour,
Across to the other side.
Oh, we will walk beside you,
We’ll follow in your footsteps,
O-ho, right down to the river,
Then cross to the other side.
Yes, we’ll cross over Jordan,
Into the promised land;
Yes, we’ll cross over Jordan,
When our Saviour holds our hand.

Oh, lead us, dearest Jesus,
Without a tear or sigh;
To that promised Land of Glory,
And the sweet bye and bye.
Oh, we’ll cross over Jordan,
So we can praise our Lord;
O-ho, raise our hands in worship,
Reap the promise of His Word.
We’ll cross over Jordan,
Into the promised land;
Yes, we’ll cross over Jordan,
When our Saviour holds our hand.

God Is Working His Purpose Out (Benson – 5 Verses) – Orchestra

God Is Working His Purpose Out Lyrics

See also God Is Working His Purpose Out (Benson) – Organ & Trumpet Descant

God is working His purpose out
As year succeeds to year;
God is working his purpose out,
And the time is drawing near;
Nearer and nearer draws the time,
The time that shall surely be,
When the earth shall be filled
With the glory of God
As the waters cover the sea.

From utmost east to utmost west,
Where’er man’s foot hath trod,
By the mouth of many messengers
Goes forth the voice of God:
‘Give ear to Me, ye continents,
Ye isles, give ear to Me,’
That the earth may be filled
With the glory of God
As the waters cover the sea.

What can we do to work God’s work,
To prosper and increase
The brotherhood of all mankind,
The reign of the Prince of Peace?
What can we do to hasten the time,
The time that shall surely be,
When the earth shall be filled
With the glory of God
As the waters cover the sea.

March we forth in the strength of God,
With the banner of Christ unfurled,
That the light of the glorious Gospel of truth
May shine throughout the world;
Fight we the fight with sorrow and sin
To set their captives free,
That the earth may be filled
With the glory of God
As the waters cover the sea.

All we can do is nothing worth
Unless God blesses the deed;
Vainly we hope for the harvest-tide
Till God gives life to the seed;
Yet near and nearer draws the time,
The time that shall surely be,
When the earth shall be filled
With the glory of God
As the waters cover the sea.

God Is Working His Purpose Out – Description

“God Is Working His Purpose Out” is a rousing hymn with words by Arthur Campbell Ainger (1841 – 1919), an English lyricist and schoolmaster at Eton College, which might explain much of its tone. It is set to the tune “Benson” by Millicent D. Kingham (1866 – 1927), a South African composer. Very piece much of its time, with its echos of militant missionaries at the peak of British Empire, this can very much be seen in the fourth verse:

March we forth in the strength of God,
With the banner of Christ unfurled,
That the light of the glorious Gospel of truth
May shine throughout the world;

Despite this “God Is Working His Purpose Out” still works today as an excellent congregational hymn, especially as a recessional. Performed in this recording by Richard Irwin on the organ.

Love Divine All Loves Excelling (Moriah, Organ, 4 Verses)

Love Divine All Loves Excelling : Lyrics

Love divine all loves excelling,
Joy of heaven to earth come down;
Fix in us thy humble dwelling;
All thy faithful mercies crown!
Jesus, Thou art all compassion,
Pure unbounded love Thou art;
Visit us with Thy salvation;
Enter every trembling heart.

Breathe, O breathe Thy loving Spirit,
Into every troubled breast!
Let us all in Thee inherit;
Let us find thy promised rest.
Take away the love of sinning;
Alpha and Omega be;
End of faith, as its Beginning,
Set our hearts at liberty.

Come, Almighty to deliver,
Let us all Thy life receive;
Suddenly return and never,
Never more Thy temples leave.
Thee we would be always blessing,
Serve Thee as Thy hosts above,
Pray and praise Thee without ceasing,
Glory in Thy perfect love.

Finish then Thy new creation;
Pure and spotless let us be.
Let us see Thy great salvation
Perfectly restored in Thee;
Changed from glory into glory,
Till in heaven we take our place,
Till we cast our crowns before Thee,
Lost in wonder, love, and praise.
