Catherine Winkworth (1827-1878) was an English translator of German Hymns who was born in Manchester and lived for a time in Germany and Switzerland. She published Lyra Germanica in 1854, The Chorale Book for England 1863 and Christian Singers of Germany in 1869. More than anyone else she is attributed with bringing the German chorale tradition to the English speaking world.
