Holy, Holy, Holy! Lord God Almighty : About
‘Holy, Holy, Holy! Lord God Almighty’ was written in 1826 by English poet, hymnwriter and bishop Reginald Heber (1783-1826). Heber was one of the first hymnwriters who set about to order hymn collections according to the Christian calendar, and the 57 hymns he wrote in his lifetime are mostly all still sung today, this one being among his most popular. Interestingly, all of the rhymes in this hymn fall on a single sound as end-rhymes with “Holy”. The tune ‘Nicea’ was composed by John Bacchus Dykes (1823-1876) to accompany Heber’s words, and the descant in this version is written by Richard M.S. Irwin.

Holy, Holy, Holy! Lord God Almighty : Lyrics
1. Holy, holy, holy! Lord God Almighty!
Early in the morning our song shall rise to thee.
Holy, holy, holy! Merciful and mighty,
God in three persons, blessed Trinity!
2. Holy, holy, holy! All the saints adore thee,
Casting down their golden crowns around the glassy sea;
Cherubim and seraphim falling down before thee,
Which wert, and art, and evermore shalt be.
3. Holy, holy, holy! Though the darkness hide thee,
Though the eye made blind by sin thy glory may not see,
Only thou art holy; there is none beside thee,
Perfect in pow’r, in love and purity.
4. Holy, holy, holy! Lord God Almighty!
All thy works shall praise thy name, in earth and sky and sea.
Holy, holy, holy! Merciful and mighty,
God in three persons, blessèd Trinity.
- Lyrics by Reginald Heber (1783 – 1826). Public Domain.
