Michael Row The Boat Ashore (Calypso, 7 Verses)

Michael Row The Boat Ashore : Lyrics

Michael row the boat ashore, hallelujah
Michael row the boat ashore, hallelujah

Sister help to trim the sail, hallelujah
Sister help to trim the sail, hallelujah

The river is deep and the river is wide, hallelujah
Green pastures on the other side, hallelujah

Jordan’s river is chilly and cold, hallelujah
Chills the body but not the soul, hallelujah

The river is deep and the river is wide, hallelujah
Milk and honey on the other side, hallelujah

The trumpets sound the jubilee, hallelujah
The trumpets sound for you and me, hallelujah

Michael row the boat ashore, hallelujah
Michael row the boat ashore, hallelujah

History

Created in 2007, this setting of Michael Row The Boat Ashore was the first hymn recorded by Richard Irwin, at the request of his father-in-law, a lay preacher. There was no organist available for the service he was to give at Ogbourne St George in Wiltshire, England and the only recordings available were an awful set using an electric organ. When the request was first made, Richard was unsure as the hymn was not a favourite of his, having been brought up with some dreadful settings. However, when he asked what style the recording should be in and the response was “Calypso” Richard became inspired and so began the recording of 100’s of hymns for churches with no live musicians. The first performance went well with even the Churchwarden dancing down the aisle!
