John Henry Hopkins (1820-1891)

John Henry Hopkins Jr (1820-1891) was an American clergyman and hymnodist, born in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, the son of John Henry Hopkins, an Episcopal bishop. He is most famous for composing “We Three Kings of Orient Are”

From 1872 to 1876, Hopkins served as rector of Trinity Church in Plattsburgh, New York and from 1876 to 1887 at Christ Episcopal Church in Williamsport, Pennsylvania. He delivered the eulogy at the funeral of President Ulysses S Grant in 1885

Hopkins died in Hudson, New York and was buried next to his father at Bishop’s House, Rock Point, Burlington, Vermont.
