John Ambrose Lloyd (1815-1874)

John Ambrose Lloyd (1815-1874) was a Welsh composer of hymn tunes and schoolmaster, born in Mold, Flintshire. His father, was a cabinet maker, but also a Baptist preacher.

It was in Liverpool, in 1831, at the age of 16 he composed his first hymn-tune: ‘ Wyddgrug.’

In 1843 he published Casgliad o Donau; this including twenty-seven hymn-tunes and two anthems. In 1870  another collection of twenty-seven hymsn, Aberth Moliant of which two had appeared in the earlier collection.

In all, his compositions include three cantatas, twenty-eight anthems, and over ninety hymn-tunes.
