James Weldon Johnson (1871-1938) was an American writer, civil rights activist, academic and diplomat, in Jacksonville, Florida. He was the older brother of J. Rosamund Johnson (1873-1954), with whom he collaborated on musical works, including Lift Every Voice And Sing which became known as Negro National Anthem.
