Samuel Webbe The Elder (1740 – 1816)

Samuel Webbe The Elder (1740-1816) was a Catholic English composer, born on Menorca. Originally apprenticed as a cabinet maker, he discovered his aptitude for music when undertaking the job of repairing a harpsichord, which he taught himself to play.

In 1776 Webbe  became organist of the Sardinian Embassy Chapel in London and later became organist and choirmaster of chapel of the Portuguese Embassy in Lincoln’s Inn Fields. This was the only place in London where the Catholic liturgy could be celebrated publicly.

The eldest of his eight children was also the musician known as Samuel Webbe The Younger (1770-1843).
