Sir Joseph Barnby (1838-1899) was an English composer, organist and conductor, born in York, son of Thomas Barnby, an organist. From aged seven, Joseph became a chorister at York Minster and later studied at the Royal Academy of Music under Cipriani Potter and Charles Lucas.
Appointed organist of St Andrew’s, Wells Street, London, in 1862 he raised the standards of music in services to a high degree. He created and conducted the Barnby’s Choir from 1864.
In 1871 he succeeded Charles Gounod as conductor of the Royal Albert Hall Choral Society and in 1875 became precentor and director of music at Eton College. In 1892 he was knighted and appointed principal of the Guildhall School of Music.
His works include an oratorio Rebekah, The Lord is King based on (Psalm 97), many service settings and anthems, as well as 246 hymn tunes (published together in 1897). Songs he wrote included the popular lullaby Sweet and Low using words by Alfred, Lord Tennyson.
