Rev John Darwall (1731-1789) was an English hymnodist and Church of England clergyman, born in the village of Haughton, Staffordshire, England.
He was educated at Manchester Grammar School and at Brasenose College, Oxford (which he entered at the age of 14). He graduated in in 1756.
He was appointed curate and then vicar of St Matthew’s Parish in Walsall where he remained until his death.
He was married twice, his second wife was the poet Mary Whateley (1738–1825). Darwall also wrote many tunes for the New Version of Tate and Brady’s New Version of the Psalms of David. The most famous of these being tune to the setting of Psalm 148 as listed below.
