Johann Hermann Schein (1586-1630) was a German composer born in Grünhain, in Saxony. He was one of the most important German composers of of the early Baroque era first to import the early Italian stylistic innovations into German music.
He was a member of the choir of the Elector of Saxony and received his musical training from Rogier Michael, the Kapellmeister, who recognized his extraordinary talent. He went on to study at the University of Leipzig.
He was employed Gottfried von Wolffersdorff as the house music director and tutor to his children. He later became Kapellmeister at Weimar, and cantor at the Thomasschule in Leipzig, conducting the choir, a post which he held for the rest of his life.
