François-Hippolyte Barthélémon (1741-1808) was a French composer and violinist born in Bordeaux, France. He studied the violin and composition in Paris and performed in the orchestra of the Comédie-Italienne.
In 1764, he was invited to England to lead a orchestra at the King’s Theatre and at Marylebone Gardens. Being well received, a commission followed for his first opera, Pelopida (1766). Further commissions lead him to decide to stay in England. He married soprano and composer Polly Young in December 1766 and raised a family.
