Kever Avot

Keber Avot (Heb. קֶבֶר אָבוֹת; “grave of the fathers”), is the custom of visiting the graveside of parents or close relatives and praying for them there. Prayers are generally about a peaceful eternal rest for the departed, and also a plea for God’s aid for the living.

Judaism does not traditionally encourage praying to the dead and the custom of kever avot is, therefore, limited to special occasions such as the day of the Yahrzeit, or the eve of Rosh Ḥodesh, especially that of the month of Elul.
