In Candle Glow Most Sacred (Nimrod -2 Verses) – SATB & Organ

In Candle Glow Most Sacred ~ Lyrics

In candle glow most sacred the Spirit rises,
Hovers, blesses one and all who gather here to pray.
Here to pray to God almighty,
Creator, splendid Mother of all,
Who gave birth to moon and sun.
Whose Spirit breathes living breath
To all who trust in Thee.
We who seek for Thee
Find comfort in the soul.

With divine light so holy,
Rises the great Holy Spirit,
Companion at times of peril,
Comforter and dearest friend.
Consoler of hearts,
Lover of our souls,
Creator, Saviour.
We sing to You our joy!
Amen.

History

Edward Elgar completed his Variations on an Original Theme, Op. 36, known more commonly as the Enigma Variations, in February 1899. There were fourteen in all, based on an original theme dedicated by Elgar “to my friends pictured within”.

Using the term “Enigma” Elgar has caused much speculation as to whether there is a hidden melody within the piece.

The 9th variation “Nimrod” is used here in this anthem and refers to Augustus J. Jaeger, a music editor and close friend of Elgar’s, known for giving the composer critical advice and help with his compositions. Nimrod is described in the Old Testament as “a mighty hunter before the Lord”, Jäger is the German for hunter.

Nimrod has become popular in its own right, often played at British funerals, memorial services, and other solemn occasions, including the National Service of Remembrance.

Mother Of Mercy (Mater Misericoriae – 6 Verses) – Organ

Mother Of Mercy ~ Lyrics

1. Mother of Mercy! day by day
My love of thee grows more and more;
Thy gifts are strewn upon my way
Like sands upon the great sea-shore.
Like sands upon the great sea-shore.

2. Though poverty and work and woe
The masters of my life may be,
When times are worst, who does not know
Darkness is light with love of thee?
Darkness is light with love of thee?

3. But scornful men have coldly said
Thy love was leading me from God;
And yet in this I did but tread
The very path my Saviour trod.
The very path my Saviour trod.

4. They know but little of thy worth
Who speak these heartless words to me;
For what did Jesus love on earth
One half so tenderly as thee?
One half so tenderly as thee?

5. Get me the grace to love thee more;
Jesus will give if thou wilt plead;
And, Mother! when life’s cares are o’er,
O I shall love thee then indeed!
O I shall love thee then indeed!

6. Jesus, when His three hours were run,
Bequeath’d thee from the cross to me;
And O! how can I love thy Son,
Sweet Mother! if I love not thee?
Sweet Mother! if I love not thee?

The God Of Love My Shepherd Is (University – 5 Verses) – Organ

The God Of Love My Shepherd Is ~ Lyrics

1. The God of love my shepherd is,
And he that doth me feed;
While he is mine and I am his,
What can I want or need?

2. He leads me to the tender grass,
Where I both feed and rest;
Then to the streams that gently pass:
In both I have the best.

3. Or if I stray, he doth convert,
And bring my mind in frame,
And all this not for my desert,
But for his holy name.

4. Yea, in death’s shady black abode
Well may I walk, not fear;
For thou art with me, and thy rod
To guide, thy staff to bear.

5. Surely thy sweet and wondrous love
Shall measure all my days;
And, as it never shall remove,
So neither shall my praise.

Come Let Us Sing (Wonderful Love – 4 Verses) – Organ

Come Let Us Sing ~ Lyrics

1. Come let us sing of a wonderful love,
Tender and true;
Out of the heart of the Father above,
Streaming to me and to you:
Wonderful love
Dwells in the heart of the Father above.

2. Jesus, the Saviour, this gospel to tell,
Joyfully came;
Came with the helpless and hopeless to dwell,
Sharing their sorrow and shame;
Seeking the lost,
Saving, redeeming at measureless cost.

3. Jesus is seeking the wanderers yet;
Why do they roam?
Love only waits to forgive and forget;
Home! weary wanderer, home!
Wonderful love
Dwells in the heart of the Father above.

4. Come to my heart, O thou wonderful love,
Come and abide,
Lifting my life till it rises above
Envy and falsehood and pride:
Seeking to be
Lowly and humble, a learner of thee.

New life without knowing death.

I Am Shaking ~ Lyrics

Meter 87 87 D.

1. I’m shaking, shaking, shaking
Up the Heaven and the Earth;
There’s a falling, falling, falling
Like the world has never seen!
And the world is shaking, shaking,
By the mighty hand of God,
That is writing, writing, writing
All our deeds upon the wall.

2. Hope is standing in the rubble
Of the shaking, shaking, shake
Witnessing the stripping, stripping
Of the multi-layers of fake;
And the hand of God is writing
All our deeds upon the wall
While powerful knees are bending
To the greatest ONE of all!

3. Hope takes comfort in the shaking
Of the structures of the world!
There is beauty in destruction:
Stripping, falling, stripping stripped
To reclaim, rebuild, and restore
The Kingdom of our Maker,
Who can never, never falter
Our Creator, Redeemer!

Description

“I Am Shaking, Shaking, Shaking” is one of a series of hymns written by Virgin Island author, Verna Penn Moll. It was inspired by the global chaos surrounding the COVID-19 pandemic of 2020. It refers to biblical texts from by Haggai 6:2-7 and Hebrews 12:27 (see below). Verna has edited and written several books  and other publications  including,  Poetic Prayers: Where Cultures Meet, 1999; Methodism: 200 years of Witness 1810-2010, 2010; Land Acquisition by Virgin Islanders, 2000; This Land: A Trust From God,  2014; and Funintun’s Christmas: traditional Christmas Customs of the BVI.

“I Am Shaking” has been set to a new tune by Richard Irwin, called “Draycot”, named after the hamlet of Draycot Foliat on the beautiful Marlborough Downs in Wiltshire, England where the composer lives. Played here by a Piano and Flute with Oboe and Violin. It was recorded and produced by Richard Irwin.

Haggai 2:6-7

“This is what the Lord Almighty says: ‘In a little while I will once more shake the heavens and the earth, the sea and the dry land. I will shake all nations, and what is desired by all nations will come, and I will fill this house with glory,’ says the Lord Almighty.

Hebrews 12:27

27 The words “once more” indicate the removing of what can be shaken—that is, created things—so that what cannot be shaken may remain.
