Edward Osler (1798 – 1863), was an English surgeon and writer, born in Falmouth, Cornwall, England, the son of Edward Osler senior. He became apprenticed to a surgeon at Falmouth, and later attended lectures at Joshua Brookes’ Blenheim St School of Anatomy and London and Guy’s Hospital Medical School. He became Resident Surgeon at Swansea Infirmary, Wales 1819 – 1825 but then joined the Royal Navy as a ship’s surgeon, doing a tour of duty in the West Indies. In the literary field his biography of the Cornish Admiral, Viscount Exmouth was published in 1835 and he wrote several other scientific books on natural history, theology, of poetry and also many hymns. He moved to Truro and became the editor of the Royal Cornwall Gazette in 1841. Osler died at Truro, Cornwall, 7 March 1863.
