MoreJohann Ludwig Steiner (1688 – 1761)
Johann Ludwig Steiner (1688 – 1761) was a Swiss music teacher and composer, born in Zurich where he spent all of his life.
He was part of a dynasty of Zurich city trumpeters that were active between 1617 and 1803. Born in Zurich he spent his whole life in this city.
As a teenager, he received lessons in violin and cello and composition.
His compositions are mainly spiritual works. In 1723 and 1735 he published two volumes of a hymn book with more than 500 songs, and he composed numerous spiritual arias and songs. His “Musical-Italian Aria-Crantz” from 1724 occupies a special position. With this collection of sacred arias by contemporary composers, Steiner first made solo singing in Italian known in Switzerland.
