1. Jesus joy of our desiring, Holy wisdom, love most bright; Drawn by thee, our souls aspiring Soar to uncreated light. Word of God, our flesh that fashioned, With the fire of life impassioned, Striving still to truth unknown, Soaring, dying round thy throne.
2 Through the way where hope is guiding, Hark, what peaceful music rings; Where the flock, in thee confiding, Drink of joy from deathless springs. Theirs is beauty’s fairest pleasure; Theirs is wisdom’s holiest treasure. Thou dost ever lead thine own In the love of joys unknown.

1. Forward through the ages, In unbroken line, Move the faithful spirits At the call divine. Gifts in diff’ring measure, Hearts of one accord, Manifold the service, One the sure reward;
Refrain: Forward through the ages, In unbroken line, Move the faithful spirits At the call divine.
2. Wider grows the kingdom, Reign of love and light; For it we must labour, Till our faith is sight. Prophets have proclaimed it, Martyrs testified, Poets sung its glory, Heroes for it died. Refrain
3. Not alone we conquer, Not alone we fall; In each loss or triumph Lose or triumph all. Bound by God’s far purpose In one living whole, Move we on together To the shining goal! Refrain

In candle glow most sacred the Spirit rises, Hovers, blesses one and all who gather here to pray. Here to pray to God almighty, Creator, splendid Mother of all, Who gave birth to moon and sun. Whose Spirit breathes living breath To all who trust in Thee. We who seek for Thee Find comfort in the soul.
With divine light so holy, Rises the great Holy Spirit, Companion at times of peril, Comforter and dearest friend. Consoler of hearts, Lover of our souls, Creator, Saviour. We sing to You our joy! Amen.

Edward Elgar completed his Variations on an Original Theme, Op. 36, known more commonly as the Enigma Variations, in February 1899. There were fourteen in all, based on an original theme dedicated by Elgar “to my friends pictured within”.
Using the term “Enigma” Elgar has caused much speculation as to whether there is a hidden melody within the piece.
The 9th variation “Nimrod” is used here in this anthem and refers to Augustus J. Jaeger, a music editor and close friend of Elgar’s, known for giving the composer critical advice and help with his compositions. Nimrod is described in the Old Testament as “a mighty hunter before the Lord”, Jäger is the German for hunter.
Nimrod has become popular in its own right, often played at British funerals, memorial services, and other solemn occasions, including the National Service of Remembrance.
