Rejoice My Soul : Recording

Rejoice My Soul! : Lyrics

Fly on the wings of dreams,
Bourne high to highest heaven.
We see the peace of Thy love.
See Thy love in the mountain stream.
My soul on the wings of dreams,
See thy love in flowers and trees.
In banner cloud on mountain peak,
Cold beauty pure, like my soul.

My soul on the wings of dreams,
Fly on the wings of dreams, of dreams.
Bourne high to highest heaven.
My soul, rejoice!

Rejoice My Soul! : Inspiration

This anthem was inspired by a dream, where I flew high over a Himalayan mountain and saw the beauty of a mountain stream and the flowers and trees in the steep valley the water had cut through the rock. I awoke motivated and full of joy. The music, to me, has a dreamlike quality, starting with the unusual time signature of 5/4. And, like in a dream, the words do not follow a particular order, until the jumble resolves in the final phrase “My Soul, Rejoice!”.

I am very grateful to David Simkins for using his flair to pull together an a cappella choir and conducting the talented voices of soprano Annie Garry, contralto Elizabeth Cotton, tenor Michael Burgess and bass, James Ward. I hope you enjoy this anthem, listen to David and the singers in As Bright As A Rose. Richard Irwin, 2022.
