Abide With Me : Lyrics

Alternative versions of Abide With Me

1. Abide with me; fast falls the eventide;
The darkness deepens; Lord, with me abide;
When other helpers fail and comforts flee,
Help of the helpless, oh, abide with me.

2. Swift to its close ebbs out life’s little day;
Earth’s joys grow dim, its glories pass away;
Change and decay in all around I see—
O Thou who changest not, abide with me.

3. I need Thy presence every passing hour;
What but Thy grace can foil the tempter’s pow’r?
Who, like Thyself, my guide and stay can be?
Through cloud and sunshine, Lord, abide with me.

4. I fear no foe, with Thee at hand to bless;
Ills have no weight, and tears no bitterness;
Where is death’s sting? Where, grave, thy victory?
I triumph still, if Thou abide with me.

5. Hold Thou Thy cross before my closing eyes;
Shine through the gloom and point me to the skies;
Heav’n’s morning breaks, and earth’s vain shadows flee;
In life, in death, O Lord, abide with me.

Lyricist : Henry Francis Lyte (1793-1847)

A Scottish hymn writer and Church of England clergyman Henry Francis Lyte MA (1793-1847) was born at Ednam, near Kelso, on the Scottish side of the English Scottish border, son of Captain Thomas Lyte. He was educated at Portora, (the Royal School of Enniskillen), and at Trinity College, Dublin, and graduated in 1814. During his university course he distinguished himself by gaining the English prize poem on three occasions. At one time he had intended studying Medicine, but this he abandoned for Theology, and took holy orders in 1815, his first curacy being in the neighbourhood of Wexford. In 1817, he removed to Marazion in Cornwall.

From Marazion, he removed in 1819 to Lymington, where he composed his Talks on the Lord’s Prayer in verse (published in 1826). In 1823 he was appointed Perpetual Curate of Lower Brixham, Devon an appointment he held until his death in 1847.

  1. I stumbled on these wonderful recordings on the Internet when, in despair, I had been looking through through my CD Backing tracks at the unsuitable (and not very good quality) recordings that I had on the Chapel shelf, preparing for a Holy Communion Service. I could not believe this treasure trove of resources: not only the huge number and variety of hymns but also the lyrics, the words, the score and the Lectionary details. I downloaded the mp3 tracks without any difficulty, loaded them on to my smart phone, and blue-toothed them to my speaker. They were very well received by the congregation on the Sunday morning.

    I want to thank you so much, Richard, for making these resources available at no charge. I intend to send a donation. Meanwhile, God bless you for your gifts of music and communication. With all good wishes, Robin.
